Welcome to Calico Creek! My name is Wendy, and I am so delighted to share our mix of stories and goods with you. You will find things that are old, some new, some hand made by me, and some crafted by my husband in his wood shop. My sister, Alicia, is working on some wonderfully unique jellies, teas, and handmade soaps, which will soon be available.
I grew up in the small East Tennessee town of Sweetwater—home of the National Muscadine Festival. I have always considered myself an old soul, and my love of antiques and primitives grew out of years of being away from home. I married my husband, Tracy, in 1994 when I was only 20 years old and still in college. After graduation, we decided to work together, which required a lot of traveling and moving from one place to another – 19 times to be exact. It’s difficult to make new friends with that kind of lifestyle, so I spent much of my time crafting, tea-staining doilies, and browsing antique stores.
After finally making the move back to Tennessee, we built a house here in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. We named the creek running through our property, Calico Creek from Craig Morgan’s Almost Home—one of my favorite songs. It seemed like the perfect name for this place as well.
I’ve often heard designers say that each room of your house needs one whimsical object for character. I agree, but why just have one? I believe it’s important to have treasures all throughout your home that tell your story. These are the items that warm our hearts and what we wish to pass on to our family and dearest friends. As you browse through our shop, let us know if there’s something specific you may be looking for, and we will work to find it for you.
I’ve added a section called Mrs. Betty’s Recipe Box where you will find old fashioned recipes for comforting meals and desserts like your mom and grandmothers served at the family dinner table and those wonderful church suppers. Find out more about Mrs. Betty and her recipes here.
We love Christmas here at Calico Creek, and one of the highlights of the year is our annual Cookie Exchange. You'll find some tips and ideas on hosting your own parties here at Wendy Loves Parties.
